Hip hop and boom bap: the brushed jazz kit is gone

This follows your Jazz rap note ("it should have rap drums"). The same fault was counted in the other mixed styles. Hip hop and boom bap had a brushed jazz kit as one of its four kits, so about one track in four played a brushed snare, an open jazz kick and a ride.

Nobody has listened to these. They were made and measured by an agent that cannot hear. The counts say every boom bap track now has rap drums. Whether the new kit sounds right is yours to judge by ear.

The same track, before and after

The first 30 seconds of one track at 86. Every note is the same in both. Only the kit differs: listen to the snare and the kick.

Before

Dusty jazz kit: brushed snare, open jazz kick. Velvet bass, Grand piano stabs

Now

Hard knock kit: punchy kick, tight snare, dirty hats. The same bass and stabs

The new kit

The first 30 seconds of another track at 90, on the new Dusty break kit. There is no before for this one: it is the kit that took the brushed kit's place.

Dusty break

Dusty kick, tight snare, finger snap, foot hat. Velvet bass

The upright bass was left in

An upright bass plays in about 15 boom bap tracks in 100. A sampled jazz bass under hard drums is part of this style, so it stays for now. Here is one such track at 96, the same notes before and after.

Before

Upright bass under the brushed kit. The bass read louder than the drums

Now

The same upright bass under Hard knock. The bass now sits under the drums

By measure the upright bass is about 4 louder than the soft synth bass in the first pair. If it sticks out to your ear, say so and it becomes its own small fix.
